Note from New York

New York in autumn.  It is beautiful – perfect, crisp fall weather;  the sounds of taxi horns.  Broadway!  I’m here for the NAMT Festival of new musicals and to see theatre.  Such hard, hard choices, but I’ve ended up with tickets to Betrayal, Pippin, Matilda, First Date and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812betrayal (With the additional nine 45-minute new musicals of the NAMT Festival, that’s a pretty intense theatre schedule for a six day visit, even for me!)  So, forgive me if you don’t hear from me for a couple of weeks – crazy busy.

I do have two interesting theatre-related tidbits to share that I learned yesterday from my stack of airplane magazine reading:

  • SONDHEIM: On October 23 — one night only — hundreds of movie theatres around the country will be showing a filmed version of a recent London West End theatre revival of the musical Merrily We Roll Along. For tickets go to
  • FOSSE: A new biography by Sam Wasson of danceman extraordinaire Bob Fosse will be released November 5, 2013. Coming in at 736 pages, it probably weighs just a bit less than he did, but I can’t wait to read it!

I’m working on some fun posts —  about HowlRound’s New Play Map, Erik Flatmo (a hugely talented scenic designer),  a Q&A with a  super-agent from The Gersh Agency who represents many of my favorite playwrights and directors (if he can find time to get to my email),  the fourth annual San Francisco Olympians Festival to be held in November (this year it will be all new plays based on different aspects of the Trojan War), and, of course, a follow-up or two from this New York trip.  So, check back toward the end of the month.  See some theatre in the meantime.
