An Embarrassment of Riches

As I look ahead to the next few weeks I am a bit awed at the number of productions I will be privileged to see.  Here is a look at what’s on my theater schedule  for the next ten days:

By and By — Tonight, I am seeing a preview performance at Shotgun Players in Berkeley of Lauren Gunderson’s new playbyandby_poster about human cloning and the accompanying ethical arguments and moral conundrums. [Speaking of previews:  I'm working on an in-depth piece about this remarkable playwright and you will be hearing a lot more from me about Lauren Gunderson in the future.   For now, follow her on twitter @LalaTellsAStory.]hanging_georgia_banner

Hanging Georgia — A play with music about the painter Georgia O’Keefe and her relationship with Alfred Stieglitz , playing  at The Pear, a tiny black box theatre in Mountain View; script by Sharmon Hilfinger, music by Joan McMillen.arcadia_150x240

Arcadia — Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece and, I can say with only minimal hesitation and the exclusion of Shakespeare, my absolute favorite play. This will be the seventh production I’ve seen of this extraordinary work over the years and the second by ACT in San Francisco. I’ve heard great things about this production so I’m predisposed to love it again and I’m confident I will still learn something new.

Wild With Happy — See my last post for more about this new, second production of Colman Domingo’s play at TheatreWorks.blackwatch_150wildhappyhomeflash

Black Watch — ACT’s presentation of the National Theatre of Scotland’s “Revolutionary Theatrical Event” at the Armory in San Francisco.

That gets me through the first week of June, and then there’s still the Tony Awards to watch, a very exciting private play reading I’ve been invited to sit in on, plus tickets to Sarah Ruhl’s Dear Elizabeth at Berkeley Rep and Michael Halberstam’s special take on A Minister’s Wife at San Jose Rep, all before the month is over.

How lucky am I?
